Colanders and strainers are few of the basic kitchen gadgets. These are not only used for straining pasta, but are of a great use for washing fresh fruits and vegetables. Smaller fine mesh strainers can also be used for sifting, straining and sprinkling, letting only the smallest particles pass through.
The only difference between a colander and a strainer is that, a strainer has a handle, a colander does not. There are different types of strainers and colanders:
Large Round Colander:Used for straining large batches of pasta or large bunches of veggies. Made of either stainless steel, or plastic.
Mesh Strainer:Used to sift flour, strain pureed fruit of seeds or gravy of lumps.
Expandable Strainer/Colander:Used to drain batches of pasta, fruit or veggies without having to set the colander down in a less-than-clean sink. Has expandable arms that can fit across the sink
Collapsible Colanders/Strainers:Used with a small kitchen having limited cabinet space, collapsible and easy to store.
Pot Strainer:Used to strain pasta, veggies, etc, right in the pot. Found in metal and plastic. |
