| What is a Crockpot ? |
A Crock-Pot (a trademark, used in US), also known as a slow cooker, is nothing but a counter top electrical cooking appliance. This uses low temperature, for cooking, which goes on for many hours, without keeping a watch on the cooking procedure. These are best used for pot roast, stew, and other suitable dishes, except for baking.
This consists of a covered round or oval cooking pot made of glazed ceramic or porcelain, and surrounded by a housing, made of metal,that has a thermostatically controlled electric heating element. The lid is made of transparent glass and is fixed in a groove in the pot edge. The vapors are collected in the groove, that provide a low-pressure seal to the atmosphere.
The crock pots come in a wide range of sizes, from 500 ml (16 oz) to 7 liters (7.4 quarts). Most of the crock pots have two or more temperature settings. It operates at approximately 160°F (71°C) on low, to perhaps 190-200°F (88-93°C) on high, and 1 hour on high followed by an indefinite time at medium heat. |
